The Next Level Network
by Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs
WIRED logo Under the Department of Labor's WIRED initiative, we've been encouraged to help aspiring entrepreneurs and small businesses with the challenges involved in start-up and expansion in Northern California.
Smart has been very fortunate to have a group of skilled entrepreneurs give generously of their time and expertise to help others, leading several Entrepreneur Workshops in January and March of 2008. From those Workshops, the NextLevel Network was born.

The Network is unique in two ways. It creates a peer-to-peer connection for people who share many of the same experiences. And it’s free.

The Network is primarily an information and education entity. The co-chairs and members connect folks with business assistance and financing services, offer support and encouragement, and facilitate the discussion of ideas and experiences. It’s a place where people can share their stories, get feedback on their products, and hear from experts brought in to speak about specific topics of interest.

Two new laws take effect July 1st regarding the use of wireless phones:
  1. The first prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle.

  2. Motorists 18 and over may use a hands-free device. Drivers under the age of 18 may NOT use a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle.

Did you know...

There are a number of ways to get help from OSHA to fix hazards in your workplace:
  1. If you are an employer, you may wish to contact the OSHA Consultation Program for your state for free on-site assistance in identifying and correcting hazards or setting up safety and health programs.

  2. You can also contact the OSHA Area Office nearest you to speak to the compliance assistance specialist about training and education in job safety and health issues.

  3. Another option is OSHA Advisors, interactive software that "walks" you through specific OSHA standards or helps identify potential hazards throughout your workplace.

High Court Lets EEOC
Retiree Health Care Rule Stand

The practical effect of the EEOC rule, which the agency finalized last year, is that employers can provide a two-tier system of retiree heath care coverage, with younger retirees receiving richer benefits than Medicare-eligible retirees.

"As expected, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, March 24, declined to review a federal appeals court ruling that effectively upholds employers’ ability to reduce health care benefits when retirees become eligible for Medicare, putting an end to nearly eight years of litigation and uncertainty."
