Selection process:
The Smart Business Resource Center's Board of Directors will select the winner from the nominees. They will consider the business' flexible work options, training and development opportunities, benefits offered, and age neutral policies and practices, as well as the written narratives from the employees.

Workforce Development Conference

August 8, 2014
Several Smart Business Resource Center staff attended the annual Workforce Development Conference sponsored by the California Workforce Association in San Diego, CA April 22-24, 2014. The conferenced was called Meeting the Challenge: Enhancing our Capacity to Impact Income Mobility.

Smart program advisers prepared three informative training presentations including the topic "Youth Entrepreneurs" and featured Smart's use of a board game, called Know Opportunity. This game, a product of mindevices, a Northern California firm, is used in the Smart youth program as an entrepreneurial training tool. Additionally, several youth participants were highlighted for accomplishments such as writing and publishing a book, a tattoo business, and an auto detailing business. Also presented was "Why Grey Matters" which touched on the positive aspects of hiring experienced workers. And finally, Smart covered "Navigating the Digital Job Application Process", which workshop provided invaluable tips for applying to jobs online.

Last night, we had the honor of accepting the third place award for outstanding customer service at the Hall of Excellence Awards Dinner 2013 on behalf of our Smart Center staff. The event, hosted by the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce, recognizes individuals and businesses in the Business Services and Retail categories for their excellent customer service. Also recognized at the event was Rosa Mena, Program Adviser in the Redding Job Center, for her commitment in providing excellent service to our customers.

The SEC has issued proposed regulations that allow anyone to invest in new and existing businesses using online crowdfunding portals. The SEC has asked for comments on the rules by February 3, 2014 and is expected to issue final rules in mid-2014. Click here to see what will be new.

Additionally, information is provided to participants to research current and projected demand for those jobs. Shasta County’s Enterprise Zone Expanded

Shasta County’s Enterprise Zone has expanded – which means, good news for smaller businesses from Palo Cedro to Burney. EDC is working on incorporating the expansion street ranges into the existing street ranges. As soon as this information is updated and complete, it will be posted for business use.

Along with the expansion to the Enterprise Zone in Shasta County, previous talk from Capitol Hill in Sacramento about changing Enterprise Zone regulations are still in effect. Lobbying is still taking place in Sacramento for finalized modifications to be put into effect in the new bill, however no one knows when or if these changes will begin. Stay tuned to find out.
